Japan is one of the most incredible countries I’ve ever visited in Asia. I had the chance to explore Japan in April 2014 with my family, and even though it was Spring, it was still quite chilly. We stayed in Shinjuku, Tokyo, for 7 days, and as a traveler from the Philippines, we needed to secure a visa beforehand.
Japan, much like Singapore, is impressively clean. The discipline they maintain is evident everywhere—especially on the roads. People strictly follow traffic signals and only cross at designated pedestrian lanes. Even when it comes to hailing taxis, you can't just flag one down in a hurry; you need to find designated taxi lanes, otherwise, you risk getting in trouble. Public cleanliness extends to smokers too, as you're expected to properly dispose of cigarette butts in the right places, not just anywhere on the street.
The people in Japan are the most polite I’ve ever encountered. Even though many don't speak English fluently, they always go out of their way to help you understand, using hand gestures or whatever means necessary. And when it comes to punctuality, the Japanese are second to none. If they say they’ll meet you at 10 a.m., they will be there at exactly that time, if not earlier. And they won’t wait if you’re late.
One moment that really stood out for me was on our way back to Shinjuku from Asakusa. Before switching train lines, my younger sister Martha needed to use the restroom. While I was in a cubicle, Martha, who had finished, was waiting outside. A kind woman not only helped her wash her hands but also handed her a towel. I was absolutely floored by the small yet meaningful act of kindness—it’s something I’ll always be grateful for.
During our trip, we mostly explored Tokyo on our own, and we took a day tour to see the stunning sights of Mt. Fuji and Hakone.

YUM!! There's my favorite Gyoza right there! But, a friend (Hi Den!) told me that
you can find the best Gyoza in Utsonomiya-shi, Tochigi, Japan (2 hours away from Tokyo).

2. Mt. Fuji & Hakone

Mt. Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain, and its beauty is absolutely majestic, especially with the snow-capped crater. It feels like a trip to Japan wouldn't be complete without seeing this iconic landmark. Although it’s a bit far from the bustling heart of Tokyo, the journey is completely worth it once you witness Mt. Fuji in all its glory. The view is truly breathtaking, and it’s one of those moments that leaves a lasting impression on you.

| Lake Ashi |
We had a 15-minute boat ride at The Lake Ashi and arrived at
Hakone National Park. Then we went ahead to Mt. Kachi kachi ropeway
and rode on a tram to the top of the mountain. There, you can see a panoramic view
of The Lake Ashi, Mt. Fuji and the Owakidani Volcanic Valley.

We took a bullet train to Shinagawa and transferred to a
JR Yamanote Line to Shinjuku.

| OMIKUJI - A Written Fortune |
In one of Japan’s traditional customs, you’ll come across a unique way to receive your fortune. You start by shaking a steel box while silently praying, and eventually, a wooden stick will fall out. Each stick has a Japanese symbol on it, and you’ll find its matching symbol on one of the drawers nearby. Once you locate the drawer, pull it open and take out the paper inside—it holds your fortune. The best part is, these fortunes are translated, so no matter where you’re from, you’ll be able to understand the message written on the paper. It’s a fascinating cultural experience!

Whether your fortune turns out to be good or bad, there’s really no need to worry too much. After all, you are the one who shapes your own destiny. I found it to be a delightful experience to finally try this tradition and immerse myself in Japanese culture. It’s a fun way to connect with the local customs while reflecting on the idea that we have the power to create our own fortunes!

It's not just a bustling hub; Shibuya is also a fantastic shopping destination. You’ll find popular brands like Forever 21, H&M, Bershka, and Uniqlo, making it the perfect spot for a shopping spree!

To wrap it all up, you absolutely must visit Japan! There’s so much more to see and experience! ❤️ If anyone were to ask me if I’d go back, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second—I definitely would! Sure, it might hurt your wallet a bit, but I promise it will be worth every penny!
