Cambodia was one of the most popular travel destinations in Asia last year. I have friends who visited and shared their photos, which made me eager to go there as well! I've wanted to visit Cambodia since 2013, but the ticket prices were prohibitively high. Honestly, I couldn’t afford a roundtrip ticket costing around 16,000 pesos. The only way to make it work was to book a flight during seat sales, which is what I usually do. Given its popularity last year, we had to finish our bookings four months in advance. Some of us found cheaper flights, but the ticket I booked cost me 7,374.19 pesos.
Each of us set aside at least 10,000 pesos for spending money, but we ended up using only half of it! Everything in Cambodia is quite affordable; a good meal typically costs only $1 to $2. Both locals and tourists primarily use US dollars instead of the Cambodian Riel.
We booked our flight with Cebu Pacific during a seat sale, and I snagged mine for just 5,038.24 pesos, which included an additional 20-kilo baggage allowance for a roundtrip ticket! We were fortunate to secure our tickets at such a low price, especially since regular one-way fares can go up to 10,000 pesos or even more. That’s definitely pricier than a trip to Hong Kong!
So, if you're planning to go to Cambodia, make sure to book your tickets only when they're on sale!
Where to stay?
We stayed at the King Boutique Hotel, conveniently located close to everything. There are plenty of eateries and convenience stores nearby, and Pub Street is just a 10-15 minute walk away.
We booked our stay for 4 days and 3 nights:
- Deluxe Double Bed (for 2 people) - P 2,944.05
- Deluxe Twin Bed (for 4 people) - P 2,738.64
The rooms were spacious and comfortable, with fast internet access, and they even had a swimming pool! I would definitely love to stay at this hotel again!
Getting around in Cambodia
Traveling in a group of six can be challenging, especially when visiting a country rich in history like Cambodia. To enhance our experience and ensure we learned as much as possible, we decided to hire a travel tour guide. Fortunately, we found an amazing guide named Ratanak Eath. The private tour for our group of six cost $110 per person, which included an English-speaking guide, transportation in an air-conditioned van, cold drinks, and entrance fees to all the temples and Phnom Kulen. However, airport pick-up and drop-off were not included.
Ratanak was not only knowledgeable and informative but also quite humorous. He doubled as our photographer, and I have to say he took fantastic pictures, as he is actually a professional photographer. If you're planning a trip to Cambodia, I highly recommend Ratanak for your tour in Siem Reap!
