MY 7 FAVORITE SPOTS IN OTTAWA, CANADA

After our tours in New York and Toronto, we headed to Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. It’s a small, quiet, and safe place, making it a great destination for both tourists and business travelers. Ottawa is where culture and politics converge. Unfortunately, we only had a day and a half to explore the city before moving on to Montreal the next day.

MY 5 FAVORITE PLACES IN TORONTO, CANADA

Flying to Canada was actually not part of the plan for the year 2015. For several years, we have never been this far away from home, and it thrills me - a place that is unfamiliar to me. I've been visiting Asian Countries which I can somehow relate to, because....I am Asian. Asia, I believe, has rich cultural heritage and traditions, that until now are being practiced. This time I want to experience the "western" side of the Earth, and of course, the long haul going to Canada - nothing more is exciting than that! My mom and I was also to meet our own friends and relatives.

We went there May 2015, and the weather was just perfect to stroll around. It gets breezy and cold sometimes, especially during at night. It couldn't get any better wearing a jacket, jeans, and a pair of sneakers, walking in downtown streets of Toronto. One great thing about Canada is the smart road system especially for public transportations. Even if it is your first time in the country, you will not find it difficult to arrive at your destination. It is very very easy and convenient, and there are many bus stops on every corner. They have passes (daily or monthly passes) which you can use for buses or trains. I enjoyed commuting in the city, since it was super easy. Just show your pass to the driver and take a seat. I feel mayabang whenever I show the driver may monthly pass - feeling taga Canada. Haha.

PLACES WE VISITED IN TORONTO

1. NIAGARA FALLS (Southern Ontario)

When you talk about "Canada" it probably reminds you of the Niagara Falls. Well, it is really a magnificent falls, that is so captivating that I can't take a perfect shot to justify its beauty. There are also lots of locals and foreigns go here just to take photos. Niagara Falls serves as the boundary between USA and Canada. This falls consists of 3 different falls: The American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls in the USA, and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in Canada.  Aside from the Niagara falls, there are also Casino, shops, restaurants, and park in the area.

If you want to get a closer view and great experience, you can ride a cruise near the falls. During our stay, it was not available due to the weather.
Cruise information click here

2. CN TOWER

CN Tower is 6th tallest free standing structure in the world. You can see a wide view of Toronto from the main pod (observation deck) of the tower. You can also see how tall it is when you step on the glass floor - which is somewhat scary, we got scared at first but we just laughed it off and took heaps of pictures. To a person with acrophobia, just don't, it will freak you out. Aside from seeing the view, and taking pictures of the city while the sun sets, you can also dine at their 360 restaurant with your family, friends, or the love of your life. You have to make a reservation before dining in.

Tickets:

Adult $35
Senior $ 25
Child (4 -12) $ 25

3. NATHAN PHILIPS SQUARE, YONGE-DUNDAS SQUARE, & OLD CITY HALL

These 3 locations are located at the busy area of Toronto. Probably because of the Mall, shopping stores, restaurants, and bars on that area.

Nathan Philips Square and the Old City Hall is adjacent to one another. When winter, you can ice skate at Nathan Philips Square just like at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. We went there Spring time, so there was only wet floors everywhere. Concert, Art displays, weekly martyr, and other events are being held here in this plaza.  We just walked around, took pictures, and watched some Canadians chillin' Hihi.

The Old City Hall, is I think the only old structure standing in the middle of modern concrete glass buildings. The architectural of the building is just beautiful, we actually just sat on the bench in front of it while eating sausage. Haha.

Yonge-Dundas Square is only a 9-min walk from Nathan Philips Square. My friend told me that this is like the "Times Square" of Toronto because of the big billboards surrounding the plaza. Concerts and other events usually held here. When we passed by the plaza, there was an event of famous youtube influentials.

4. TORONTO CENTRE ISLAND

From Union Station, we walked going to the Ferry Terminal Station between Bay St & Young Street. We paid $7.25 each for the ferry roundtrip ticket. It is a 15 minute boat ride going to the Centre Island. It was just freakin' cold there that my 2 layer of clothing weren't enough to make me feel warm. The Centre Island is big that is impossible to walk it all around just the whole day. You may rent a bike if you want to.

Of course, this is an island so there must be a beach! During summer, tourists and locals go here to beat the heat in the metro. Kids also will love the place here because of the vast area they could run on to. Aside from the beach, families, friends, and couples can go picnic, and can barbecue as well.

5. CASA LOMA

Do you still remember the movie Tuxedo of Jackie Chan? How about X-Men? or The Pacifier starring Vin Diesel? Well, some of the scenes were filmed here in Casa Loma, also other movies and TV episodes.

MY 8 FAVORITE SPOTS IN NEW YORK CITY

NEW YORK CITY
Who wouldn’t dream of visiting this iconic place? New York City is a backdrop for countless films and has become synonymous with cinema. When I visited, many locations brought back memories of some of my favorite movies, making the experience even more special.

Here is my personal top favorite places in NYC.

1. ROCKEFELLER CENTER

Rockefeller Center is renowned for being one of the tallest buildings in New York, offering stunning views of the city. During the winter season, it attracts many visitors who come to enjoy ice skating. If you're an art lover, this is a must-visit spot, as the building features numerous artworks on display. I distinctly remember admiring the chandelier and realizing it was made of Swarovski crystals—yes, those are indeed Swarovski!

2. TIMES SQUARE

The lights, massive billboards, bustling crowds, the NYE ball drop, famous luxury shops, delicious pizza, cheesecake, hotdogs, and burgers are just a few of the sights and experiences that define Times Square. These elements made me truly feel, "YES, I am finally in the Big Apple!"

3. CENTRAL PARK

New Yorkers take great pride in Central Park, as it offers a lush green oasis amidst the concrete jungle. It’s a vibrant place filled with a diverse mix of people—joggers, cyclists, families, couples having picnics, older folks reading newspapers on benches, and even dogs enjoying a stroll.

Spending a couple of days exploring just Central Park would be wonderful. You’ll feel safe wandering around, thanks to the presence of patrols throughout the area. Plus, there are pedicabs and bikes available for rent, making it easy to see the entire park since it is quite expansive!

4. EMPIRE STATE BUILDING

Everyone in the English-speaking world knows the Empire State Building. Its fame extends beyond Alicia Keys' song; it offers a breathtaking observation deck on its top floor where you can take in panoramic views of New York City. Believe me, the city lights truly make you feel brand new. It's easy to see why it’s called the City That Never Sleeps—I don't think it ever really does!

The viewing deck is open all day, but I highly recommend visiting at night to experience the stunning lights. While blue skies and clouds are lovely, the magic of the illuminated city is simply unparalleled.

5. STATUE OF LIBERTY

We took a cruise around so we could have a better view of the famous NY Skylne. This photo doesn't even give justice to the beauty of the view.

New York wouldn't be the same without this iconic lady holding the torch! I’m so grateful to have seen the Statue of Liberty, which has stood for over a century. Just so you know, it was a gift from the people of France as a symbol of their independence.

These days, security measures at the site have been heightened due to various events, so it’s essential to book your tour in advance if you want to go inside.

6. 9/11 MEMORIAL

I don't need to elaborate on the memorial, as it evokes deep emotions. One area features a recording of a conversation between a flight attendant and a terrorist on board the plane, where you can hear the screams of the passengers. The sight of baby clothes is especially heart-wrenching. It's incredibly painful to witness and hear these reminders of that day. Yet, it’s important that we continue to pray for the souls lost in New York during this tragic event, ensuring they are never forgotten.

7. GRAND CENTRAL STATION

Remember when Justin Timberlake finally confessed his love for Mila Kunis in Friends With Benefits? Yes, I'm sure you do! And I’m also certain you recognize this iconic station from various films.

Grand Central Terminal is the first major train station in America and also the busiest in the city. It's closed from 2:00 AM to 5:30 AM.

Personally, I adore Grand Central for its stunning architecture—the high ceiling is simply AMAZING. The clock in the middle of the station is also famous and can be spotted in many movies.

8.  MACY'S
SHOPPING

Macy's is famous in a lot of states, but the first branch was established in New York. This branch has been up for 157 years already. Talk about makeup, huh. Yes! Yes to makeup, clothes, watches, bags, and other things your heart desires whenever you go shopping. I, personally, decided to buy my friends their pasalubongs from Macy's because of the friendly prices. We got lucky that we shopped at Macy's on sale.

TRAVEL JOURNAL: New York City, USA

"New York - concrete jungle where dreams are made of. There's nothing you can't do now you're in New York. These streets will make you feel brand new; the lights will inspire you."

Most New York tourists would quote this song since it's one of the most famous New York City songs. After having been to New York myself, I couldn't help but quote the song too. It was a surreal moment, really. We all know that the city that never sleeps have been used in a gazillion movies and I am so blessed to see and understand why. The lights have really inspired me.

Where to stay?

www.choicehotels.com/

Some people I know usually stay with their relatives, because hotels in the city are kind of expensive. If you are looking for a budget hotel, I would recommend the Comfort Inn. We stayed there for 4d/5n, and basically just to sleep or rest after touring around the city. It is located at the West side of Manhattan, New York City, and a few-minute walk to Central Park and to 2 subway stations. There are other branches of Comfort Inn in New York City, but each branch have different rates. The closer you are to the tourist spots, the more it will cost you.

How to start your tour?

1. Make yourself your own tour guide

www.roughguides.com

It is always fun to just be free, walk around the city at your own time, and taking lots of good pictures without the time pressure. The fact that you get to experience walking in New York City is awesome, simply because IT IS NEW YORK, BABY! Just by observing how fast the New Yorkers walk like everybody's in such a rush is basically food for the soul. Seeing them ride a bike or subway to their offices wearing  suit and tie will awe you. Yes, it came in a bit shocking to me because I never ever seen one here.

Don't worry about the city and subway map. They are free at the airport, and most likely than not, they also come in free at the hotel you are staying at.  It is fun to walk around unfamiliar places and discover new things. Don't worry about getting lost in the big city. Don't be scared to ask the locals for directions; they know better.

2. Avail a Walking Tour

www.getyourguide.com

There are a lot of tours New York has to offer. You just have to choose if you'd rather walk or ride a bus. If you choose to join a walking tour, it is for free. The Sandemans New Your tour offers a 2 1/2 free tour and starts every day at 11 am. You just have to meet the tour guide in front of THE MUSUEM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN.

This tour covers: Wall street, 9/11 Memorial, Broadway, New York Stock Exchange, Broadway, Battery Park, Trinity Church, Federal Hall, Bowling Green, Trump Building (40 Wall Street), Woodworth Building, St. Paul's Chapel, Musueam of the American Indian, and much more. Since the tour is for free, I guess they deserve a tip. Tipping is customary.

They also have MIDTOWN TOUR that starts also every day at 3 pm for $20. Meet your tour guide in front of the clock in GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL MAIN CONCOURSE. It is also a 2 1/2 walking tour that covers Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, Broadway, The Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building, The Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, St. Patrick's Cathedral, 42nd Street, Prohibition-era Speakeasies, Bryant Park, New York Public Library, Shubery Alley, and more.

For more information about this tour, kindly visit their website at www.sandemansnewyork.com

3. Ride a Hop-off Hop-on Sightseeing Bus

When we arrived in New York City we were actually clueless on how we are going to start to explore the city. The front desk at our hotel suggested to try the hop-off hop-on sightseeing bus to surely see everything. There are of course hop-off hop-on sightseeing bus companies in New York such as City Sightseeing New YorkCity Sights NY, and Big Bus New York.

We availed the 2 Day all loops package of BIG BUS B Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing for $59. It is way cheaper than the other tour buses. It is a 2 decker bus, and the upper level is open - meaning no roof. I must suggest that you sit on the upper level to see the beauty of the big city, and for you take good pictures. This tour includes the Downtown Loop, Uptown Loop, Brooklyn Tour, Night Tour. It also comes with a free sightseeing cruise to Statue of Liberty, and one hour Bike Rental around the city. I must say the tour was really worth it.

There is no particular meeting place. Just go to any bus stop that has a "BIG BUS" on it, or go to M&M's World Stop at 7th Ave & W 48th St.

Downtown Loop (8 am start time to 5 pm last departure): M&M's World Stop, Times Square 42nd, Empire State Building, Korea Town, Flat Iron District, Union Square, Greenwich Village/NYU, Noho, Soho/Little Italy, Chinatown, World Trade Center/City Hall, Battery Park - State Street, Battery Park - Battery Place, High Line, and Madison Square Garden/Penn Station

Uptown Loop (8:50 am start time to 5:10 last departure): M&M's World stop, Times Square 42nd, Rockefeller Center, Central Park & Colombus Circle, Lincoln Center Plaza, Dakota/Strawberries Fields, American Musuem of Natural History, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Grant's Tomb/Riverside Church, Apollo Theatre/Harlem, Museum of the City of New York, The Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick Museum, Central Park Zoo, and Central Park South.

Brooklyn Tour (Departure times: 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm): Meeting place is at the bus stop near the New York City Hall. It is at the right side if you are facing the City Hall.

It is a non-stop ride when touring around in Brooklyn. It will only stop at two places: the World Trade Center/City Hall and Prospect Park & Zoo. And if you wish to go back to Times Square after this tour, take the Downtown Loop bus.

Night tour (Departure times is every 30 minutes from 6 pm to 8:30 pm): Meeting place is at the M&M's World Stop
